Disinfectants and Shock treatments
All swimming pools, including above ground pools, will require the water to be regularly monitored and treated using pool chemicals to maintain water quality. Pool disinfectant products are very important pool chemicals, as they help to prevent the build up of harmful microorganisms such as bacteria in the pool water. Our pool chemicals range includes several disinfectants containing bromine or chlorine in various forms, and each pool disinfectant product is suitable for particular situations, as summarised further down this page
You will also find details of Sunspot pool chemical shock treatments on this page. Chemical shock treatments can be used pre-season, or as problem solvers, to chemically oxidise waste..
Disinfectants

Sunspot
disinfectants provide a comprehensive based range of products for rapid
and/or slow Chlorine or Bromine release - depending on the need or chosen
preference. Disinfectants are used to ensure bather safety by eliminating
harmful bacteria, but they also help control algae (but not necessarily
the most cost effective way of controlling these - see algaecides). Generally
choose one disinfectant preference for your pool (excluding regular shock
needs, advised below). If you need to change for any reason it is recommended
that you use your old stock first.
An ideal disinfectant programme will ensure that free available Chlorine/Bromine is within the range on the chart below.

Shock Treatments
Users should also consider periodic use of shock /non-chlorine shocks to eliminate any organic waste build up (e.g. after heavy user sessions or after thunderstorms etc.)
Disinfectants and Shock Treatments Summary
The tables below summarise the wider choice of disinfectants available and some product characteristics.
| Products | Characteristics |
Use |
| MICRO-CHLOR RAPID DISSOLVING TABLETS | Fizzy, rapid dissolving for quick release | Pre-dissolve in buckets, ideal for 'Splasher' pool, paddling pools and baths. |
| *MULTI-FUNCTIONAL CHLORINE TABLETS -200G | Slow-dissolving stabilised 4 in 1 components for superb
clarity. pH acidic (but buffered) |
Many pools with skimmer basket(s). Approx weekly dosages. Use also in plastic floating dispensers. |
| TRICHLOR 200G CHLORINE TABLETS / SMALL CHLORINE TABLETS | Slow dissolving stabilised ordinary chlorine tablets. pH acidic. |
Many pools with skimmer basket. Approx weekly dosages. Small tablets good for reloading small chlorinators. Use also via plastic floating dispensers. |
| *SMART STICKS | Slow dissolving stabilised tablets with 'release control'
additive. pH acidic. |
Ideal for pools with time clocks and skimmer baskets. |
| (PRE LOADED) FLOATING DISPENSERS | Pre-loaded Chlorine Tablet plastic jerrican (with volume
variable punch holes). pH acidic. |
Above ground pools, outdoor concrete pools or holiday period use. |
| *SUPER STABILISED CHLORINE GRANULES | Rapid reaction, stabilised, daily treatment regime. 4 in 1 components for superb clarity and water feel. pH neutral. | All pools but daily treatments recommended (do not exceed stabiliser level recommended). |
| STABILISED CHLORINE GRANULES | Rapid reaction, ordinary stabilised, daily treatment
regimes. pH neutral. |
All pools but daily treatments recommended (do not exceed stabiliser level recommended). |
| AQUABROME | pH neutral and effective in broader pH ranges than chlorine. Semi automatic continuous feed via installed Brominators. | Ideal for pools and dosed via installed brominators. May also be used via plastic floating dispensers. |
| Products | Characteristics | Use |
| GRANULAR SHOCK | Pre-dissolve in buckets to eliminate residues. Most rapid reaction non - stabilised. pH alkaline - may cloud water temporarily. | Pre - season or to oxidise waste periodically. Good problem solver. |
| *QUICK DISSOLVING SHOCK | As above but in finer soluble granular form, with minimal residue. | As above. |
| NON CHLORINE SHOCK | Most rapid reaction non - stabilised. Does not affect
Chlorine/Bromine levels. pH acidic |
Pre - season or on full refill and regular oxidisation of waste. |
* STAR RECOMMENDATIONS FOR DISINFECTING. We draw your specific attention to MULTIFUNCTIONAL TABLETS and SUPER STABILISED CHLORINE GRANULES, containing clarifiers, flocculants, and skin enhancers etc.- true time saving products that reduce the need for numerous additional special treatments. Another major innovation are SMART STICKS which contain 'release control' additives ensuring Chlorine is released only where there is sufficient water to flow over them - making them ideal for pools with time clocks. Smart Sticks reduce unwanted chlorine and acidic conditions on the pool equipment, likely with ordinary chlorine tablets used in time clock fitted pools.
QUICK DISSOLVING SHOCK is a finer more soluble quick
acting shock for routine/periodic shock treatments.
